Lighting Designer/ Head Electrician

Job Description/Duties and Responsibilities

General Purpose:

Under the direction of the Executive Producer and Production Manager the Lighting Designer/Head Electrician will exercise a high degree of autonomy and discretion, plan, coordinate, oversee and implement all lighting design at Theatre Memphis. The LD/HE will maintain a high standard of craftsmanship, efficiency and safety, while working with other staff and volunteers to provide the utmost continuity and artistic integrity possible for the theatre.

Theatre Memphis production staff is expected to maintain a collaborative work environment. At the beginning of each production we will assess the scale and time requirements for that production, allowing us to create a timeline for what, when, and how we will all be working on that production. All staff positions are expected to maintain normal operating business hours of 9 to 5 Monday through Friday. Do be aware that there will be additional evening and weekend hours required of the LD. This is a full-time, exempt position with PTO, sick leave, and health insurance. Starting salary is $38,000.00


The Theatre Memphis Lighting Designer is in charge of all aspects of lighting for both spaces at the theatre. This involves the creation and maintenance of lighting systems for 6 mainstage and 4 black box shows and one remount. The LD will design all productions. The LD manages volunteer crews in lighting.

Essential Duties:

  • Oversee volunteer crews during construction, load-in and strike.
  • Attend technical and dress rehearsals and note sessions as necessary.
  • Maintain the integrity of all lighting designs at Theatre Memphis.
  • Oversee rigging and focusing of lights.
  • Take responsibility for the maintenance, inventory, and security of lighting equipment.
  • As needed Participate in the construction and fabrication of Special Effects.
  • Work with sound designer to link firing of sound cues.
  • Participate in the execution of rentals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by either the Executive Producer or the Production Manager.
