Mamma Mia! takes the Lohrey Stage

Memphis, TN – Mamma Mia! kicks off Theatre Memphis’ 99th season on the Lohrey Stage and runs August 16 - September 8, 2019.  An energetic and irresistible musical based on the songs of the international pop group, ABBA. The show is  set on a romantic Greek island where a young girl plans her wedding while trying to discover who of three men may be her father so he can walk her down the aisle.  Mix in an unsuspecting mother (who has single-handedly created a vacation taverna) and her old friends from a “girl group” and the scene becomes a dancing, prancing, elaborate production of musical chairs as they all discover the true meaning of love.

Director Cecelia Wingate returns to Theatre Memphis in the leadership role with great expectations for Mamma Mia! on the Lohrey Stage. “I’ve become so enthralled with the production staff at Theatre Memphis and their capabilities and professionalism,” she gushes, “and the casts they can attract.” She continues, “One of the reasons I like to work at Theatre Memphis is that we have the time and the ability to be detailed in how we tell the story, whether it be one searching for love or one searching for liberty.” Wingate's usual directing genre is musical theater.  She most recently helmed the much lauded production of 1776 at TM." As an actor, she has just returned from performing at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. in an award-winning drama, Byhalia, Mississippi.”

The cast for Mamma Mia! includes almost 40 performers who have been rehearsing for over eight weeks. Lead roles are held by Emily Chateau and Isabel Celata. Supporting roles include Lindsey Roberts, Jenny Madden Cassie Thompson, Markee Maloof, Timothy Marsh, Bryan Huffman, Jonathan Christian, Cary Vaughn, Tyler McGee, Kylan Owens, Jared Johnson, and Ashley Cunningham. Executive Producer of Theatre Memphis, Debbie Litch, proclaims, “Without the strength of the ensemble and the star power of our leading players we couldn’t do a big show like Mamma Mia! It is a tribute to our community to have the talent that we have and that they are willing to share that talent to the community with us.”
