Job Description/Duties and Responsibilities
General Purpose:
Under the direction of the Production Manager, the Sound Designer will exercise a high degree of autonomy and discretion, plan, coordinate, oversee and implement all sound design at Theatre Memphis. The SD will maintain a high standard of craftsmanship, efficiency and safety, while working with other staff and volunteers to provide the utmost continuity and artistic integrity possible for the theatre.
Theatre Memphis production staff is expected to maintain a collaborative work environment. At the beginning of each production we will assess the scale and time requirements for that production, allowing us to create a timeline for what, when, and how we will all be working on that production. All staff positions are expected to maintain normal operating business hours of 9 to 5 Monday through Friday. Do be aware that there will be additional evening and weekend hours required of the SD. This is a full time, non-exempt position with PTO, sick leave, and health insurance. Starting salary is $18.26/hour.
Responsibilities:
- Design and execute the implementation of TM Mainstage and Next Stage theatre sound designs.
- Act as Sound Engineer and Front of House Mixer for all Theatre Memphis Productions. • Serve as Master Sound Engineer for all external and internal rental events. • Maintain safe working environment through compliance with all safety regulations • Maintain clean and safe workplace
- Work with lighting designer to link firing of sound cues.
- Perform other duties as assigned by either the Executive Producer or the Production Manager. • Additional duties include maintenance of applicable paperwork, sound plots, and rep plot paperwork.
Event related responsibilities:
- Install speaker systems
- Prepare consoles
- Maintain and upkeep equipment
- Troubleshoot and repair audio equipment
- Prepare orchestra “pit” as needed
- Wire special sound projects and equipment
- Install and troubleshoot closed circuit video and intercom systems as needed
Required Skills and Experience:
- BA in Audio/Sound design or equivalent experience required.
- Minimum 2 years educational/professional theatre experience in sound design. • High level supervisory experience and ability to lead a crew.
- Working knowledge of QLab, Protools, SCS, and emerging sound software programs • Ability to troubleshoot, repair and maintain all audio equipment including wireless mics,
Recording equipment and speaker systems.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills with the abilities to work well under pressure, make decisions, and represent the organization well.
- An excellent customer oriented and service based demeanor to ensure all events receive top level audio support.
- Candidates must be able to lift 50lbs, work at heights, and have a valid driver license.
